Rivian Automotive Inc. confirmed on April 20, 2026, that its primary manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois, sustained structural damage following a severe weather event. A tornado touched down in the vicinity of the plant during the early morning hours, primarily affecting the site’s external logistics centers and parts storage warehouses. Despite the damage to these support structures, Rivian officials stated that the main vehicle assembly lines were not directly hit and remain operational.

The damage is specifically concentrated in areas designated for the logistics and staging of the R2 midsize SUV platform. Rivian had been in the process of scaling up its supply chain operations at the Normal site to support the R2 launch. According to a company statement, the storm damaged several outbound shipping docks and a secondary warehouse housing pre-production components for the R2 line. The company is currently assessing the inventory of these components to determine if any specialized tooling or unique parts were compromised.

Tim Fallon, Rivian’s Executive Vice President of Manufacturing, issued a statement clarifying the timeline for recovery. Fallon noted that structural engineers are on-site and that repairs to the damaged roofing and siding of the logistics buildings are expected to be completed within the week. "Our primary focus remains the safety of our employees, all of whom have been accounted for with no injuries reported," Fallon said. "While the logistics flow for the R2 program faces a temporary setback, we do not anticipate a shift in the overall production start date at this time."

The Normal plant, a 4-million-square-foot facility, is the central hub for Rivian’s production of the R1T pickup, R1S SUV, and Electric Delivery Van (EDV). Prior to the storm, Rivian had announced significant investments in the facility to integrate R2 production, including a $1.5 billion expansion plan. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to reach a production capacity of 215,000 vehicles annually at the Illinois site. The company confirmed that the R1 assembly lines resumed operations following a brief safety inspection on Monday morning. Logistics teams are currently rerouting incoming shipments to unaffected areas of the campus to maintain the flow of materials for existing models.

Local authorities in McLean County reported that the tornado was part of a larger storm system moving through Central Illinois. Rivian has activated its emergency contingency plans, which include utilizing off-site storage facilities in the Bloomington-Normal area to mitigate the loss of on-site warehouse capacity. The company stated it will provide further updates as the full extent of the damage to R2-specific logistics equipment is quantified.
