Amazon.com Inc. announced on April 22, 2026, a major expansion of its heavy-duty electric vehicle fleet through a new partnership with Einride, a Swedish freight technology company specializing in electric and autonomous transport. Under the terms of the agreement, Amazon will deploy 75 fully electric semi trucks across five key logistics hubs in the United States. This initiative is part of Amazon’s broader strategy to scale its zero-emission heavy-duty fleet, reduce operational fuel costs, and accelerate progress toward its long-term sustainability commitments.

The deployment targets five strategic regions: Southern California, Northern Illinois, Central Texas, Northern New Jersey, and Central Florida. These locations were chosen due to their high density of fulfillment centers and their proximity to major freight corridors. The 75 vehicles are Class 8 electric semi trucks, which are designed to handle the rigorous demands of middle-mile logistics—the transport of goods between Amazon’s massive fulfillment centers and its smaller sortation facilities. By replacing diesel-powered trucks on these routes, Amazon expects to significantly lower the carbon intensity of its internal supply chain.

Udit Madan, Vice President of Amazon Transportation, highlighted the importance of the partnership in achieving the company’s Climate Pledge goal of net-zero carbon by 2040. Madan noted that while last-mile electrification has seen rapid adoption, the middle-mile segment presents unique challenges due to the weight of the loads and the range requirements of heavy-duty vehicles. The collaboration with Einride is intended to demonstrate the commercial and operational viability of electric heavy-duty trucking at scale.

Einride will provide not only the hardware but also its proprietary freight operating system, known as Saga. This AI-powered platform will be integrated into Amazon’s logistics operations to manage the electric fleet effectively. Saga provides real-time data on vehicle performance, battery health, and energy consumption, while also optimizing routes and charging schedules to ensure maximum uptime. Robert Falck, CEO and founder of Einride, stated that the partnership represents a milestone in the transition to digitalized and electrified road freight, moving beyond pilot programs to large-scale industrial application.

To facilitate the rollout, Amazon is investing in specialized charging infrastructure at each of the five deployment sites. These facilities will feature high-power charging stations capable of replenishing the semi trucks' batteries during driver breaks or loading periods. While the companies did not reveal the total value of the contract, the deal builds upon a successful multi-year collaboration in Europe, where Einride has managed electric freight operations for Amazon in Sweden and Germany since 2022. The first of the 75 trucks are scheduled to enter service immediately, with the full fleet expected to be operational by the end of 2026.
