Amazon.com Inc. announced on April 23, 2026, a significant expansion of its strategic partnership with artificial intelligence research firm Anthropic. The agreement involves an additional investment of up to $25 billion by Amazon, marking one of the largest capital commitments in the history of the artificial intelligence sector. This new funding builds upon Amazon’s previous multi-billion dollar investments and solidifies the company’s position as the primary cloud provider for Anthropic’s operations.
A core component of the expanded deal is the provision of massive infrastructure resources. Amazon Web Services (AWS) has committed to delivering up to 5 gigawatts of new compute capacity specifically dedicated to training and deploying Anthropic’s Claude models. This capacity will be powered by Amazon’s custom-designed AI hardware, including the latest generations of Trainium and Inferentia chips. The scale of the compute agreement is intended to support the development of increasingly complex foundational models that require significant energy and processing power.
Amazon Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassy stated that the expanded collaboration is designed to accelerate the delivery of generative AI technologies to enterprise customers. Jassy emphasized that the integration of Anthropic’s models with AWS infrastructure provides a unique performance and cost advantage. Under the terms of the agreement, Anthropic will continue to use AWS as its primary cloud provider, utilizing the platform for the majority of its workloads, including safety research and the development of future large language models.
The investment is expected to be deployed in phases, with the capital supporting both research and the physical expansion of data center infrastructure required to house the 5 gigawatts of capacity. Anthropic Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei noted that the partnership is essential for the company’s mission to build safe and steerable AI systems at a global scale. Amodei highlighted that the access to AWS’s specialized silicon and vast compute resources is a critical factor in the company’s ability to iterate on the Claude model family.
This announcement follows a period of rapid growth for the partnership, which began with a $4 billion investment commitment in late 2023. The new agreement also includes provisions for enhanced availability of Anthropic’s models on Amazon Bedrock, a fully managed service that allows developers to build and scale generative AI applications. Amazon confirmed that the 5-gigawatt power requirement would be met through its ongoing investments in carbon-free energy projects, consistent with its long-term sustainability goals. No changes were made to the governance structure of Anthropic, which remains a public benefit corporation.
