Applied Materials, Inc. announced on April 22, 2026, that Advantest Corporation has joined its Equipment and Process Innovation and Commercialization (EPIC) platform as a strategic innovation partner. This collaboration is designed to strengthen the ecosystem between front-end semiconductor manufacturing technologies and back-end testing, addressing the growing complexities of advanced chip architectures and heterogeneous integration.
The EPIC platform, headquartered at Applied Materials’ multi-billion dollar research and development facility in Sunnyvale, California, serves as a collaborative environment where chipmakers, equipment suppliers, and university researchers can co-develop new technologies. By bringing Advantest, a global leader in semiconductor test equipment, into the EPIC ecosystem, Applied Materials aims to streamline the transition from initial wafer fabrication to final device testing. This integration is intended to reduce the time required to bring new logic and memory devices to market while improving overall manufacturing yields.
A central focus of the partnership is the synchronization of data across the semiconductor manufacturing value chain. Traditionally, front-end fabrication and back-end testing have operated as distinct silos. Under the EPIC framework, Advantest will work with Applied Materials to link process control and metrology data from the wafer fab with electrical and thermal test results from the back-end. This data-centric approach is expected to provide chipmakers with a comprehensive view of device performance, allowing for faster identification of defects and more precise optimization of manufacturing parameters.
Gary Dickerson, President and CEO of Applied Materials, stated that the inclusion of Advantest is a pivotal step in the industry’s shift toward chiplet-based designs and 3D packaging. Dickerson noted that as the industry moves beyond traditional Moore’s Law scaling, the boundary between fabrication and testing is increasingly blurred. He emphasized that the EPIC platform provides the necessary infrastructure for partners to co-optimize hardware and software solutions in a real-world manufacturing environment.
Douglas Lefever, CEO of Advantest, highlighted the importance of shifting left in the development cycle. By engaging with Applied Materials early in the process innovation phase, Advantest can develop test methodologies that are specifically tailored to new materials and transistor structures before they reach high-volume manufacturing. Lefever stated that this proactive approach is essential for meeting the rigorous reliability standards of high-growth sectors such as artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and automotive electronics.
The EPIC Center represents a $4 billion investment by Applied Materials over a seven-year period. The facility is designed to host more than $1.5 billion in research and development equipment, providing partners with access to state-of-the-art tools for lithography, deposition, and etching. Advantest’s participation adds a critical layer of automated test equipment expertise to this environment, further solidifying the EPIC platform's role as a central hub for semiconductor innovation.
