The report finds that while 84 percent of surveyed mid-market and enterprise-level firms have increased their AI-related capital expenditures over the past 12 months, only 32 percent have established a formal AI ethics or governance committee at the board level. This disconnect suggests that financial commitment to the technology is outpacing the structural oversight necessary to manage operational and regulatory risks.

The survey, which included responses from 600 C-suite executives and board members, reveals that 68 percent of organizations lack a clear definition of accountability for AI-generated outcomes. Furthermore, 55 percent of respondents admitted that their boards do not receive regular reports on AI performance metrics or risk assessments. In terms of technical integration, the report notes that 41 percent of companies are deploying generative AI tools in production environments, yet only 19 percent have implemented automated monitoring systems to detect algorithmic bias or data drift.

Grant Thornton’s analysis highlights specific deficiencies in integrated risk management. The report states that 47 percent of firms treat AI risks as isolated IT issues rather than systemic enterprise risks. This lack of integration is particularly evident in data privacy compliance, where 38 percent of organizations reported that their current AI deployments are not fully mapped to existing data protection impact assessments. The proof gap is further characterized by a lack of specialized expertise; 62 percent of board members surveyed stated they do not feel sufficiently trained to oversee AI strategy.

The speed of AI adoption is currently outstripping the evolution of corporate governance, according to Grant Thornton’s Advisory Services division. The firm emphasized that without a clear line of accountability from the development team to the boardroom, companies face increased exposure to regulatory penalties and operational failures. The report concludes that bridging the AI proof gap requires the implementation of standardized reporting frameworks and the appointment of dedicated AI oversight officers to ensure that technological investments align with long-term governance standards.

The findings come as regulatory bodies globally increase scrutiny on algorithmic transparency. The report notes that 72 percent of executives expect stricter AI-specific regulations within the next 24 months. Despite these expectations, the proof gap remains a persistent hurdle, with 51 percent of companies reporting that they have no immediate plans to revise their internal audit processes to include AI-specific workflows. The data suggests a critical need for boards to synchronize their financial strategies with robust governance protocols to mitigate the risks associated with rapid AI scaling.
