Apple Inc. announced on April 20, 2026, that John Ternus will become the company’s next Chief Executive Officer, effective September 1, 2026. Tim Cook, who has led the technology giant as CEO since 2011, will transition to the role of Executive Chairman of the Board. The leadership change follows what the company described as a thoughtful, long-term succession planning process that received unanimous approval from the Board of Directors.

John Ternus currently serves as Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering. A mechanical engineer by training with a degree from the University of Pennsylvania, Ternus joined Apple’s product design team in 2001. During his 25-year tenure, he has overseen hardware engineering for several of the company’s most significant product lines, including the iPad, the Mac, and the iPhone. He was a central figure in the transition of the Mac lineup to Apple Silicon and the introduction of AirPods.

The transition occurs as Apple focuses on integrating artificial intelligence across its ecosystem and seeks its next major product breakthrough. Ternus is recognized within the company for his technical decisiveness and ability to navigate internal culture. Colleagues point to his management of the Mac Mini update as an example of his leadership style; he reportedly bypassed traditional design delays by determining that the product’s enclosure did not require a major overhaul, allowing for a faster technical refresh for developers.

As Executive Chairman, Tim Cook will continue to assist with select company matters and focus on engagement with global policymakers. Cook’s 15-year tenure as CEO saw Apple’s market capitalization grow from approximately $350 billion to over $4 trillion. Under his stewardship, annual revenue increased from $108 billion in fiscal year 2011 to more than $416 billion in fiscal year 2025. Cook will work closely with Ternus through the summer to ensure a smooth transition. Following the announcement, Apple shares fell approximately 1% in after-hours trading.

In related leadership changes, Johny Srouji, currently the Senior Vice President of Hardware Technologies, will take on the role of Chief Hardware Officer. Additionally, Arthur Levinson, who has served as Apple’s non-executive chairman for 15 years, will transition to the role of lead independent director on September 1. Ternus will also join the Board of Directors upon assuming the CEO position.

The board’s selection of a hardware specialist to lead the company signals a strategic emphasis on hardware-led innovation during the AI era. Ternus will be responsible for steering Apple as it seeks to maintain its competitive position in the global technology market while managing a research and development budget that exceeded $30 billion in the most recent fiscal year.
