According to a security bulletin released by the company, the breach originated from a compromise of Context.ai, a third-party artificial intelligence analytics platform utilized by a Vercel employee. The incident allowed external actors to bypass standard authentication protocols and gain entry into specific Vercel development and staging environments.
The investigation, which began at 04:15 UTC on April 21, revealed that attackers successfully compromised a service account on Context.ai. This account was linked to a Vercel staff member, providing the attackers with a vector to pivot into Vercel’s internal systems via an exposed OAuth token. Technical logs indicate that the unauthorized access persisted for approximately four hours and twelve minutes before being detected by Vercel’s automated threat detection systems. During this window, the attackers were able to view metadata related to internal projects and access a limited number of non-production environment variables within the Vercel Dashboard v3.0 interface.
Vercel’s Chief Information Security Officer stated that the company immediately revoked all active sessions and rotated secrets for any potentially impacted services, including API keys and database credentials.
