MGIC Investment Corp (MTG) Shares Dip 2.4% on Revenue Miss and Rising Loss Ratios

MGIC Investment Corp (MTG) shares retreated in Wednesday’s after-hours session after the mortgage insurer posted first-quarter revenue that fell short of Wall Street estimates. While the company delivered a bottom-line beat and announced a massive $750 million share buyback program, a significant spike in net losses incurred appeared to rattle investors.

MGIC Investment Corp reported first-quarter 2026 GAAP and non-GAAP earnings of $0.76 per diluted share, surpassing the analyst consensus of $0.73. However, the earnings beat was overshadowed by a revenue miss and signs of a normalizing—or perhaps deteriorating—credit environment. Total revenue for the quarter came in at $297 million, missing the $303.1 million estimate and marking a 2.99% decline compared to the same period last year.

The market reaction was immediate, with MTG shares falling 2.44% to $28.42 in after-hours trading, down from a closing price of $29.13. The decline suggests that investors are prioritizing top-line growth and credit quality over the company's aggressive share repurchase strategy.

Loss Ratios and Credit Quality in Focus

The most striking figure in the report was the net losses incurred, which jumped to $33.2 million from just $9.6 million in the first quarter of 2025. This pushed the company’s loss ratio to 14.1%, a sharp increase from the 3.9% reported a year ago. While CEO Tim Mattke characterized the start of the year as "strong," the rising loss ratio suggests that the ultra-low delinquency environment seen in previous years may be fading.

The primary delinquency inventory stood at 27,006 at the end of the quarter, with a delinquency rate of 2.44%, up slightly from 2.30% a year earlier. Despite these headwinds, the company maintained a solid annualized return on equity of 13.0%, though this was down from 14.3% in the prior-year period.

Aggressive Shareholder Returns

To counter the headwinds in the mortgage market, MGIC continues to lean heavily into capital returns. The company announced that its board of directors has authorized a new share repurchase program of up to $750 million, set to run through the end of 2028. This follows an active first quarter where MGIC repurchased 7.2 million shares for $192.6 million and an additional 1.7 million shares through late April.

"We are well-positioned to navigate dynamic environments, supported by our deep industry expertise, strong balance sheet, and disciplined approach to capital allocation," said Mattke. The company also declared a $0.15 per share dividend, maintaining its commitment to returning capital even as insurance-in-force growth remains modest at $302.7 billion.

Analyst Perspective and Market Outlook

Analysts will likely focus on the "Net Premium Yield," which compressed to 31.1 basis points from 33.0 basis points a year ago. This compression, combined with the revenue miss, suggests that pricing competition or a shift in the portfolio mix is pressuring the top line. Furthermore, while New Insurance Written (NIW) rose to $14.4 billion from $10.2 billion YoY, it was down sequentially from the $17.1 billion seen in Q4 2025.

While the $750 million buyback provides a floor for the stock, the nearly four-fold increase in losses incurred will be the primary topic of tomorrow's 10:00 a.m. ET conference call. Investors will be looking for clarity on whether the loss ratio spike is a one-time adjustment or the beginning of a broader trend in the housing credit market as the industry navigates a higher-for-longer interest rate environment.
